Earth Hour Online Pledge

Last year, Earth Hour 2009 brought together 4,088 cities around the world to make a definitive statement against climate change by turning off their lights for one hour. This simple yet effective “vote” for the environment has grown significantly since it was first introduced in Sydney by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) in 2007.

In 2009, Toronto Canada saw a decrease of 15% in electricity demand. Vietnam’s electricity consumption fell by 140,000 kWh while the saved Philippines 611 mWh, the equivalent of shutting down a dozen coal-fired plants for an hour.

This year, Earth Hour 2010 will take place on Saturday 27 March at 8:30pm. As students at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, we are now called to take a stand, to take responsibility, get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future.

Join us in the fight against climate change! You can help us make Earth Hour 2010 an even bigger movement by voting with your light switch. Sign our online pledge by leaving a comment below stating your name, country, program and your commitment.

We also invite everyone come by the College Green Basketball Court on Earth Hour on Saturday, March 27th at 8:00pm for a night of electricity-free entertainment, good food and great company.

I wish that this One Hour Effort would actually convert into a permanent effort, for example of using more public transportation and stopping outrageous air-conditionning.
so… I pledge to make this initiative continuous, and hope I will be followed.

    Cheers,

I submit myself to the pledge…wholeheartedly! Not only for the upcoming Earth Hour Day, perhaps…until the two broken lightbulbs in my room are replaced (now I feel so chuffed for not having taken the effort to replace the bulbs)! Will also try to spare life of some fortunate, charming (and delicious) animals too by going vegan for one day (that is, if they are not turned into some hard-to-resist dish).

I will not use MRT for Earth Hour 2010 due to its enormously huge electric consumption.

    March 26, 2010 at 13:48

Interesting… but I think if everyone used the MRT rather than a car it would make a great difference…

  18. Arshad Mirza

I pledge. I love my dear Earth! Mommy I love you.

    More seriously,
I think this one hour is a symbolic thing,
On an everyday basis check before you leave a room in school or at home if you have left on/running guzzling electricty
    1. Television
    2. AC
    3. Bulbs
    4. Fans

Even when you are at home be conscious if you are running two fans, and two bulbs, where you can do with one each.

Make every hour of your life~ an earth hour.

  26. Sam (Shreekant Gupta)

Great idea! I am all for it.

Of course, every hour every day is Earth Hour for 56% of the rural poulation in India that does not have access to electricity (over 300 million people).

In most cities too power outages are endemic so we celebrate ‘Earth Hour’ on many occasions!

But for LKY School this is great start to get a feel for how the other half lives.

Hopefully it will also lead to greater eco-consciousness at Bukit Timah Campus like:

    1. Not having to buy bottled water at the canteen–wish they’d provide glasses and a water cooler since S’pore water is safe and clean to drink.

    2. Recycling cans and paper cups, etc.

    3. Printing double sided.

    4. Not having Arctic temperatures inside the buildings!

Hope its not too much to wish for… 🙂
